Star Boxing Clubs Long And Proud History!

The Halifax Star name is famous within local boxing circles and its revival was timely as the Star Hotel, near Halifax Town Hall at which the club was launched was demolished in the 1990’s. Established in the 1940s by Bob Ennis It originally occupied the top floor of the Star Hotel.

In the early 1970’s, it moved to the Workout Warehouse in Square Road but failed to reach it’s former heights and closed shortly thereafter. It was reopened by 2 qualified ABA coaches, James Cahill and John Cassidy based at Mill Lane but again the club closed its doors.

The biggest name to come from Star Boxing was almost certainly Yorkshire hero and former British, European and Commonwealth heavyweight boxing champion Richard Dunn who fought Mohammed Ali in 1976 for the world heavyweight championship.

In November 2021 current professional heavyweight boxer Josh Sandland and ex-boxer Andy Lowrie brought Halifax Star Boxing back to life when they opened the new gym based at Calder Workshops,Gibbet St HX1 4JQ.

Both Josh and Andy own and run the gym along with other coaches and volunteers with a vision to bring Halifax Star Boxing back to life.

The gym is a fully approved BBBoC Professional Boxing Gym and also an England Boxing approved Amateur Boxing Gym.

All the trainers/coaches who work within this club are fully qualified to teach the art of boxing on all levels and are fully qualified first aiders as well as being DBS certified.

Since re-opening its doors back in November 2021 the club is now run as a non profitable CIC (community interest company) and work with many local community outlets and other charitable organisations within Halifax.

Currently the club is thriving and is undergoing expansion due to the success of what the club offers to everyone within the community.
